In 2000, then-Grand Master Charles Cathey initiated a drive to raise money for scholarships that could be awarded to deserving North Carolina students. The Freemasons of North Carolina generously supported his call to help send graduating high school seniors to college. For his tireless efforts to educate the youth of North Carolina, the scholarship program begun by Charles Cathey now honorably bears his name.

The Cathey Scholarship, funded by the Freemasons of North Carolina through the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, rewards high school seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement. The Grand Lodge Scholarship Committee selects recipients. Guidelines for applicants Eight scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded for the 2022-2023 academic year. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, or the equivalent average under the school’s grading system, and be enrolled in an accredited North Carolina high school. The scholarship committee will consider factors including scholastic achievement, participation in extracurricular and civic activities, involvement in the community and personal recommendations.

The application period is now open. (NOTE: If you were unable to take the SAT, ACT, or other collegiate entry-level exam due to COVID-19, please indicate as much on your application. Candidates will not be penalized for this omission.)
