Green Level Lodge No. 277

Scholarship Guidelines

1. Purpose

The Green Level Lodge No. 277 Scholarship Program is established to support post-secondary educational pursuits of the children and grandchildren of members in good standing of Green Level Lodge No. 277, consistent with Masonic values and charitable best practices as recognized by the North Carolina Masonic Foundation (NCMF).

2. Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a child or grandchild of a current member in good standing of Green Level Lodge No. 277
  • Be a graduating high school senior, current undergraduate, or post graduate student
  • Be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited:
    • College or university
    • Community college
    • Technical or trade school
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrate character and conduct consistent with Masonic principles

3. Scholarship Amount & Frequency

  • The Lodge shall award one (1) scholarship per calendar year in the amount of $1,000
  • The award is non-renewable
  • The Lodge reserves the right to withhold the scholarship in any year in which no qualified applicant is identified, or sufficient funds are not available

4. Selection Criteria

Selection shall be based on a holistic review of:

  • Academic achievement
  • Character and personal integrity
  • Community, school, work, or service involvement
  • Essay quality and clarity of purpose
  • Financial need may be considered at the discretion of the committee but shall not be the sole determining factor

5. Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following by the published deadline:

  1. Completed scholarship application
  2. Academic transcript (official or unofficial)
  3. Proof of relationship to a Green Level Lodge No. 277 member
  4. Proof of enrollment or acceptance to an eligible institution
  5. One letter of recommendation from a teacher, employer, coach, or community leader

6. Essay Requirement

Applicants must submit a 500–750 word essay responding to one of the following prompts:

  • How have the values exemplified by Freemasonry influenced your personal goals and character?
  • How will your education enable you to positively impact your community and society?

7. Selection Committee

  • The Worshipful Master shall appoint a Scholarship Committee consisting of no fewer than three Lodge members
  • Any committee member with a conflict of interest shall recuse themselves from review and deliberation
  • Committee recommendations shall be final, subject to Lodge approval if required

8. Award Distribution & Financial Controls

(DRAFT)

  • All scholarship funds shall be distributed directly to the educational institution on behalf of the recipient
  • No funds shall be distributed directly to the student or family
  • Funds may be applied to:
    • Tuition
    • Required fees
    • Books or other qualified educational expenses, as permitted by the institution
  • Disbursement shall occur only after receipt of:
    • Proof of enrollment, and
    • Billing or account information from the institution
  • All disbursements shall be made in accordance with Lodge financial controls and, when applicable, LCA and NCMF guidelines

9. Recipient Recognition & Stewardship

  • The recipient may be recognized at a Lodge meeting or Lodge-sponsored event
  • The recipient may be asked to submit a brief thank-you letter or update for Lodge and NCMF stewardship records

10. General Provisions

  • Receipt of this scholarship does not guarantee future awards
  • The Lodge reserves the right to amend or discontinue the program at any time
  • All awards are subject to available funds, Lodge approval, and compliance with applicable NCMF policies
